Palasa is a town located at a distance of 88 km east of Srikakulam, the district headquarters. It is the biggest and most important constituency in Srikakulam district. Until 1995, it was considered a gram panchayat. It was established as a city panchayat in 1996. Due to the increase in income sources, some of the surrounding villages were formed as a municipality in 2002 with a view to increasing the population. According to the 2011 census, the population of the Palasa zone is 97,551. Of these, 47,915 were males and 49,636 were females. 59% of the total population lives in urban areas and 41% live in rural areas. The average literacy rate is 75.7% in urban areas and 62.5% in rural areas. In the Palasa zone, 45,182 people are engaged in various vocational and employment activities. Of these, 4,947 were farmers (employer or co-owner), 8,567 were farm workers. The rest make a living as diverse, small business owners, working as workers in the cashew industry. Based on these figures, it is clear that more than 80 percent are laborers. Ratti, Akupalli, Mettur and Thothuru (Hanuman Sagar) are the beaches located at a distance of 14 km from the Palasa Railway Station. Kasibugga is a municipality in the Palasa zone. It is located on the 5th National Highway between Srikakulam and Berhampur.
The twin towns Palasa - Kasibugga are home to some of the largest cashew processing centers in India. The town of Palasa has about 350 cashew nut industries. The cashew industry in Palasa provides direct and indirect employment to about 15,000 people in this region. Cashews grown in this region are exported from Palasa and Kasibugga to the Gulf, Europe, Asia and African Countries. The town is known as the "White Gold City" due to its cashew processing industry.
