JV Somayajulu:
JV Somayajulu is a veteran film artist who surprised the audience, critics and the connoisseurs of art by his authentic acting skills. He was born in August 1928 in Srikakulam, Andhra Pradesh. He inherently carried appealing traits required to ensnare the audience.
JV Somayajulu’s journey started quite early. Just as a boy of 16, he made his debut. There was no looking back after that. It was followed by four long decades of theatre activity where he rose to immense popularity.
JV Somayajulu’s major hit was the role of ‘Sankara Sastry’ in Shankarabharanam. S P Subramanyam , dazzled by Somayajulu’s performance in Ra Ra Krishnaiah had recommended him to K Vishwanath, the director of Sankarabharanam who was looking for someone to enact a Brahmin and music exponent.
The release of Shankarabharanam was a proud moment for not just the Telugu Industry but for the entire nation. His role as ‘Sankara Sastry’ is counted within the best 50 performances ever witnessed in Indian cinema and earned him the national award.

JV Somayajulu instantly got a privileged space in the Telugu film industry and every performance set a new bar. Other popular roles in movies are ‘Ajja’ and Abhirami’s father in Kannada films. In his theatre career, he played ‘Kanyasulkam’ 500 times with his brother. He was also a part in the Hindi movie ‘Pratibandh’. For his subtlety of performance, he held many respectable positions.
JV Somayajulu was the head of Theatre Arts in Telugu University and has served in the directorate of Cultural Affairs. Unfortunately, in 2004, he succumbed to a heart attack at the age of 76. Despite his physical absence, J.V Somayajulu will always be experienced by his enraptured audience through his excellent roles which are still vivid in its memory.
