Amadalavalasa

Amadalavalasa is a town with a name rooted deeply in its past - often interpreted as the town of castor oil. In ancient times, this place was known as Herandapalli, a Sanskrit term where Heranda means castor oil. Interestingly, despite this strong linguistic connection, castor plants are not grown here today, making the name a reminder of traditions that no longer exist.

Archaeological studies indicate that Amadalavalasa has been inhabited since the Iron Age. Evidence of early historic human activity has been discovered on the nearby Sangamayya Konda hills that were once active centers of Buddhist and Jain tradition, showing that ancient communities lived, worked, and moved through this region long before modern settlements took shape.

Amadalavalasa Mandal

Amadalavalasa is an important town in Srikakulam district, and is surrounded by the Nagavali, Vamsadhara, and Gosthani rivers. Work on the Narayanpur Barrage in the Bhoorja Zone is seen as helpful for improving water flow and management. People also want a new bridge at the Balasala crossing, as the area becomes difficult to use during floods.

The closure of the cooperative farmers’ sugar factory remains a major concern, as thousands once depended on it for employment, and many residents oppose its transfer to APICC. Politically, the Amadalavalasa constituency is one of the seven segments of the Srikakulam Lok Sabha seat. In 2024, Koona Ravi Kumar of the Telugu Desam Party was elected as MLA.
