Sarubujjili Mandal is a rural mandal in Srikakulam district, Andhra Pradesh, home to about 33,000 people across more than 40 villages. It is located near the right bank of the Vamsadhara River, in the region that once linked the coastal plain of Kalinga to the rest of the Deccan. Archaeological studies and explorations in the Vamsadhara valley describe Dantapura as an early urban and Buddhist settlement, connected by trade routes and river movement to other coastal sites such as Salihundam and Kalingapatnam.
The mandal is surrounded by heritage-rich sites such as Dantapuram (Danthapuri), an important early Buddhist location, and Dannanapeta, famous for its megalithic dolmens, including a massive single-stone capstone weighing nearly 50 tonnes. Today, the visible remains – mounds, stupa traces and scattered artefacts – are a reminder that this small village once stood at the heart of Kalinga’s Buddhist history. Most families here depend on farming and fishing.
