Tekkali

The Tekkali region was once ruled by King Ganapati Padmanabhadev of Paralakhemundi. After his time, the kingdom was divided between his sons, and Tekkali came under the rule of Govindanath Dev and Krishna Chandra Dev. It is believed that the name “Tekkali” evolved from the Odia word “Tikli,” meaning a cattle basket, a name that emerged after Govindanath Dev married into another royal family and adopted the village under a traditional custom.

Today, Tekkali stands as an important administrative zone in the Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. It is known for its historical significance, cultural heritage, and political prominence. The town also holds a special place in Andhra Pradesh’s political history, as the former Chief Minister, the late N. T. Rama Rao, once contested and won from this constituency, earning a strong connection with the people of this region.

Tekkali zone is also well known for the famous migratory bird locations - Telineelapuram and Telukunchi. Telineelapuram is located within the Tekkali region, while Telukunchi falls under the Ichapuram zone. Both villages attract thousands of Siberian migratory birds every winter. Nature lovers visit these places to witness pelicans and painted storks feeding their young on tall trees, creating a beautiful natural spectacle.

Every year between September and March, Telineelapuram and Telukunchi turn into a peaceful winter home for Siberian migratory birds. During this season, a few thousand pelicans and painted storks arrive after flying thousands of miles across mountains, rivers, forests, and seas. These birds choose this region because of its calm climate, tall nesting trees, and nearby water bodies that support their food needs.
